ClearSCADA

Upgrading from ClearSCADA 2005

A new feature has been added to ClearSCADA 2007 R0, that allows the ClearSCADA server to emulate previous versions (ClearSCADA 2005 R0 and R1). Please refer to the online help (Server Emulation Chapter of the Server Administration Guide) for further guidance on using this feature.

This is useful when upgrading systems with a large number of clients, as the format of mimics was changed between ClearSCADA 2005 and ClearSCADA 2007. The ClearSCADA 2007 ViewX client is capable of displaying mimics saved by both ClearSCADA 2005 and ClearSCADA 2007 ViewX clients. The ClearSCADA 2005 ViewX client can only display mimics saved by ClearSCADA 2005 ViewX clients. The server emulation feature allows ClearSCADA 2007 to appear as a ClearSCADA 2005 server, forcing ClearSCADA 2007 ViewX clients to save mimics in the ClearSCADA 2005 format. This then allows for a mix of ClearSCADA 2005 ViewX clients and ClearSCADA 2007 clients to be used with a ClearSCADA 2007 server.

NOTE: ClearSCADA 2007 requires a new license to be issued. ClearSCADA 2005 licenses will not validate against ClearSCADA 2007. Customers holding a valid support agreement with Control Microsystems are entitled to a license upgrade free of charge. To upgrade licenses please follow the procedure given in Updating Your ClearSCADA License
NOTE: After the upgrade, all user accounts with passwords that are longer than 16 characters will no longer allow the user to log on. The passwords on these accounts will need to be reset. User accounts with passwords that are 16 characters or less are not affected by this change.

When upgrading a system with separate clients and servers, the recommended strategy is to upgrade the clients before the servers. However this strategy was only adopted from ClearSCADA 2005 R1 and it is not possible to connect a ClearSCADA 2007 client to a ClearSCADA 2005 R0 server, because the ClearSCADA R0 server will reject connections from newer clients.

The normal upgrade method for updating a main-standby system is to upgrade the standby server first, allow the two servers to synchronise, and then upgrade the main server.

NOTE: Because of changes to the main-standby functionality between ClearSCADA 2005 and ClearSCADA 2007, it is not possible to have a ClearSCADA 2005 standby server connected to a ClearSCADA 2007 main server.

Please follow the recommended Upgrade Process detailed below.

ClearSCADA 2005 R0/R1 Standalone Server

  • Shut the server down.
  • Upgrade the server to ClearSCADA 2007 R0.2.
  • Upgrade the ClearSCADA license on the server.
  • Restart the server.

ClearSCADA 2005 R0/R1 Main and Standby Servers with no Clients

  • Shut both the main and standby servers down.
  • Upgrade the main server to ClearSCADA 2007 R0.2.
  • Upgrade the ClearSCADA license on the main server.
  • Restart the main server.
  • If the main server has upgraded correctly, upgrade the standby server to ClearSCADA 2007 R0.2.
  • Upgrade the ClearSCADA license on the standby server.
  • Restart the standby server.

NOTES:

  1. It is important that the server that was the last to be shut down in a redundant pair is the first to be restarted to ensure that data received by this server is not overwritten by data from an older server.

ClearSCADA 2005 R0 Main and Standby Servers with Clients

  • Shut both the main and standby servers down.
  • Upgrade the main server to ClearSCADA 2007 R0.2.
  • Upgrade the ClearSCADA license on the main server.
  • Restart the main server.
  • Configure the main server to emulate ClearSCADA 2005 R0.
  • Restart the main server.
  • If the main server has upgraded correctly, upgrade the standby to ClearSCADA 2007 R0.2.
  • Upgrade the ClearSCADA license on the standby server.
  • Restart the standby server.
  • Configure the standby server to emulate ClearSCADA 2005 R0.
  • Restart the standby server.
  • Upgrade each client in turn to ClearSCADA 2007 R0.2.

NOTES:

  1. It is important that the server that was the last to be shut down in a redundant pair is the first to be restarted to ensure that data received by this server is not overwritten by data from an older server.
  2. Once the ClearSCADA 2005 R0 emulation has been enabled on both the main and standby servers, either ClearSCADA 2005 R0 or ClearSCADA 2007 R0 clients can be used to connect to the servers.
  3. Once all of the clients have been upgraded to ClearSCADA 2007, the ClearSCADA 2005 R0 emulation should be disabled on both the main and standby servers.

ClearSCADA 2005 R1 Main and Standby Servers with Clients

If there are a small number of clients that can easily be upgraded:

  • Upgrade each client in turn to ClearSCADA 2007 R0.
  • Shut both the main and standby servers down.
  • Upgrade the main server to ClearSCADA 2007 R0.
  • Upgrade the ClearSCADA license on the main server.
  • Restart the main server.
  • If the main server has upgraded correctly, upgrade the standby server to ClearSCADA 2007 R0.
  • Upgrade the ClearSCADA license on the standby server.
  • Restart the standby server.

If there are a large number of clients or clients that cannot easily be upgraded (due to location, availability, etc.):

  • Shut both the main and standby servers down.
  • Upgrade the main server to ClearSCADA 2007 R0.
  • Upgrade the ClearSCADA license on the main server.
  • Restart the main server.
  • Configure the main server to emulate ClearSCADA 2005 R1.
  • Restart the main server.
  • If the main server has upgraded correctly, upgrade the standby to ClearSCADA 2007 R0.
  • Upgrade the ClearSCADA license on the standby server.
  • Restart the standby server.
  • Configure the standby server to emulate ClearSCADA 2005 R1.
  • Restart the standby server.
  • Upgrade each client in turn to ClearSCADA 2007 R0.

NOTES:

  1. It is important that the server that was the last to be shut down in a redundant pair is the first to be restarted to ensure that data received by this server is not overwritten by data from an older server.
  2. Once the ClearSCADA 2005 R1 emulation has been enabled on both the main and standby servers, either ClearSCADA 2005 R1 or ClearSCADA 2007 R0 clients can be used to connect to the servers.
  3. Once all of the clients have been upgraded to ClearSCADA 2007, the ClearSCADA 2005 R1 emulation should be disabled on both the main and standby servers.

Upgrading from ClearSCADA 2007 R0 and later

When upgrading a system with separate clients and servers, the recommended strategy is to upgrade the clients before the servers.

The normal upgrade method for updating a main-standby system is to upgrade the standby server first, allow the two servers to synchronise, and then upgrade the main server.

Please follow the recommended Upgrade Process detailed below.

ClearSCADA 2007 R0/R0.1/R0.11 Standalone Server
